What Types of Football Nets Are Available?

As we’ve already mentioned, there are two main types of football net available on the market today. It’s important to choose the right one, or your chosen net may not fit your goals.

Replacement Football Nets for Samba Goals

Samba goals are made from durable plastics – making them lightweight and easy to move around. Available in a multitude of sizes, they are designed to make the fitting of replacement nets a quick and simple process.

Available in 3mm and 4mm twisted HDPE, our replacement Samba nets are designed for both match and training goals. The main difference is that the match goals have a top runback and a runback at the bottom of the goal.

Replacement Football NetsSteel/Aluminium Goals

Before you choose the ideal replacement football nets, make sure you know what kind of football goals you have.

Available in standard or straight runback shapes, these nets fit a wide range of goal sizes, from compact 8ft x 4ft to full-size 24ft x 8ft posts. Designed to perform in all weather conditions, they’re ideal for year-round use.

Our standard replacement football nets are designed to fit both continental and international football goal styles. If you have a flat run-back goal, you should buy a flat run-back football net

Flat Run Back

Flat run-back goals are simple in design, with the net directly attached to the goal frame and running straight to the ground. These goals are ideal for compact spaces or training purposes, as they lack additional net supports at the top or rear. They are easy to set up and store, making them popular for amateur and casual football setups.

Continental

Continental goals feature 'D' shaped supports, extending the net upwards and creating a top runback. This design ensures the net stays clear of the goal area, reducing the chance of interference during play. Commonly used for full-size pitches, these goals are sturdy and designed to meet professional standards. There’s a great selection of continental football nets available at The Soccer Store.

International

International goals have a deep rear net support, often extending from the crossbar to the ground, creating a box-like structure. This design provides more space inside the international football net, making it ideal for professional matches. The box-style net keeps its shape and ensures a neat and professional appearance

Measuring Your Existing Goals for Replacement Nets

Our replacement football nets for both metal-frame goalposts and Samba goals are available in a wide range of sizes. Order the wrong size, and the net either won’t fit or will become damaged prematurely.

Fortunately, it’s very easy to measure football goals, and it takes just a minute or two.

Measure the Width and Height

Use a measuring tape to measure the internal width (goalmouth) from post to post. Then, measure the height from the ground to the underside of the crossbar. Ensure these dimensions match standard goal sizes like 24ft x 8ft for senior goals or 12ft x 6ft for youth goals.

Check the Depth

Measure the depth of the goal, both at the top (roof runback) and the bottom (base runback). This ensures the net fits correctly and remains taut. Depth is often given as part of the net size dimensions.

Identify the Net Support Type

Check whether your goal has flat runbacks, 'D' shaped continental supports, or box-style net supports. This detail is crucial as different net types are designed for specific support structures.

Confirm the Twine Thickness

Consider the durability required. Match-quality nets typically have a thicker twine (3mm or more) compared to training nets.

How Are Replacement Nets Fitted to Existing Football Goals

Once you’ve received your replacement football nets from The Soccer Store, fitting them should take just a few minutes.

Fitting Replacement Nets to Samba Goals

Start by hooking or tying the new net to the top corners of the goal frame, using Samba net clips or ties. Gradually work your way down the sides, ensuring the net is evenly tensioned and secure.

Attach the net securely to the bottom of the frame, ensuring there is no sagging. Check that the net fits snugly and aligns properly with the goal's structure. After securing the net, test it by lightly pulling on various sections to ensure it is fully fastened and ready for use.

Fitting Replacement Nets to Steel/Aluminium Goals

Check the goalpost's design to see if the net will be wrapped around the frame and secured with Samba Net Clips or inserted into a channel using channel net clips.

Carefully detach the old net by unhooking it from the clips or removing it from the channel. Inspect the clips or channel for wear and replace them if necessary.

Lay the new net flat and align it with the frame. Ensure the top, sides, and base are correctly positioned to fit the goal's dimensions.

For Samba Net Clips, wrap the net around the frame and secure it by clipping the net to the goalpost. Space the clips evenly to maintain proper tension. For Channel Net Clips, slide the clips into the channel on the goalpost and thread the net through them for an even, snug fit.
